History of the aircraft carrier

Aircraft carriers are warships that evolved from balloon-carrying wooden vessels into nuclear powered vessels carrying dozens of fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Since their introduction they have allowed naval forces to project air power great distances without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. Balloon carriers were the first ships to deploy manned aircraft, used during the 19th and early 20th century, mainly for observation purposes. The advent of fixed wing aircraft in 1903 was followed in 1910 by the first flight from the deck of a US Navy cruiser. Seaplanes and seaplane tender support ships, such as HMS Engadine, followed. The development of flat top vessels produced the first large fleet ships. This evolution was well underway by the mid 1920s, resulting in ships such as the HMS Hermes, H sh , and the Lexington-class aircraft carriers. World War II saw the first large-scale use of aircraft carriers and induced further refinement of their design, leading to several variants. Escort aircraft carriers, such as USS Bogue, were built as a stop-gap measure to provide air support for convoys and amphibious invasions

German Military Cargo Ships Produced in Series ...

The story of German military cargo ships produced in series programs in the Mediterranean and Black Sea area during the 2nd World War is not well known among naval historians. The “Kriegstransporter” (KT) were German-designed armed cargo ships of 1250 t displacements (700 tdw/ 834 GRT) produced in series in World War II for the Mediterranean and Black Sea theatre of war, only one ship was built in Hamburg. The concept of the “Kriegstransporter” was developed in 1941 by the Kriegsmarine out of the necessity to replace the many losses of German and Italian merchant ships in the Mediterranean. Construction contracts were signed for 60 ships, approximately 40 ships were completed before the end of the war. The much less meaningful program of the “Schwarzmeer-Einheitsschiffe” (SME) was a project for the series production of coastal motor vessels of 706 GRT for the Black Sea theatre of war as there was an awkward shortage of tonnage for the army’s supply routes along the coast. Construction contracts for a total number of 12 units were signed, none of them was completed before the end of the war. While the SMEs played no more role in combat operations in World War II, the KTs were involved in many military encounters with Allied warships and aircraft 1942-1945.

It's one of the stealthiest, most dangerous underwater warships ever built—and it's about to set off World War III. Silent at less than five knots and capable of a massive nuclear warhead punch, it's the 240-foot Russian Kilo Class submarine. Strapped for hard cash, the Russians have produced ten new Kilos for Beijing. The Chinese have already received three of the subs and now the last seven are ready to be delivered—a code-red situation the Pentagon must avert. Armed with a full strike force of Kilos, China can cripple American interests, shatter the balance of power, and successfully achieve the unthinkable in the Pacific Rim. But not if the newly appointed National Security Adviser, wily Texas admiral Arnold Morgan, can stop them—using the navy's deadliest covert forces. In a breathtaking race against time, a team of Navy SEALs penetrates deep inside the remote waters of northern Russia on a daring mission of destruction. And in the icy darkness of the North Atlantic, a brave U.S. captain takes his 7,000-ton nuclear vessel on a hair-raising trip beneath the polar ice cap to head off a powerful Russian cordon determined to transport the Kilos at any cost. Horns locked in a tense game of geomilitary survival, each of the world' three most powerful nations knows that one mistake will mean all-out war.

Brooklyn Navy Yard

Not much larger than a few city blocks (219 acres, plus 72 acres of water), the Brooklyn Navy Yard isone of the most historically significant sites in America. It was one of the U.S. Navy's major shipbuilding and repair yards from 1801 to 1966. It produced more than 80 warships and hundreds of smaller vessels. At its height during World War II, it worked around the clock, employing some 70,000 people. The yard built the Monitor, the world's first modern warship; the Maine, whose destruction set off the Spanish-American War; the Arizona, whose sinking launched America into World War II; and the Missouri, on whose deck World War II ended. On June 25, 1966, the flag at the Brooklyn Navy Yard was lowered for the last time and the 165-year-old institution ceased to exist. Sold to the City of New York for $22.4 million, the yard became a site for storage of vehicles, some light industry, and a modest amount of civilian ship repair.
