War at Sea and in the Air: Forgotten Voices of ...

The first British major success of World War II was when the Royal Navy forced the preying pocket battleship, Graf Spee, to scuttle at sea. Hitler had ordered a blockade of the British Isles and for some months German U-boats and warships caused havoc among allied merchant shipping carrying vital supplies. In 1941, the one sided battle of the Atlantic became more even when the Royal Navy started moving ships in convoy with escorts using radar and information from British scientists who had cracked the Kreigsmarine version of the Enigma Code captured by the Royal Navy. The perils of the Atlantic were only equalled by the convoys on the run to northern Russia. Sub-zero temperatures, pack ice and appalling weather conditions plus the menacing Luftwaffe and the German Navy based in Norway, made it one of the most hazardous actions of the entire war. Meanwhile, in the air, bomber planes of the RAF and U.S. air force were incessantly bombarding German industries and cities. Casualties on the ground were devastating and the life expectancy of the aircrew was alarmingly short. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Timothy West. Earth Two. A new home for the survivors of the fleet, the men and women who battled against seemingly insurmountable odds to survive the assault of the First Imperium and to destroy the homicidal Regent, the artificial intelligence committed to their destruction. They have prospered in the years since their arrival, adapting the technology of the First Imperium to build a new and prosperous republic. But as the fear of the First Imperium recedes, cracks have begun to appear, conflicts looming that threaten to destroy all they have worked to achieve. There are rivalries between the clones known as Tanks and the NBs, naturally born humans - disputes driven by envy, resentment. And on the fringe of the new society, the enhanced genetic hybrids known as Mules are feared by both groups, though they continue to decipher First Imperium technology for the benefit of all. But there is a far greater threat lurking in deep space, for the Regent was one of two, and its copy activated automatically upon its destruction. It has been planning, exploring, building vast fleets of new warships, and now it is ready to strike at a divided republic, to accomplish what the Regent failed to do. It is ruthlessly single-minded, existing for a single purpose. And that purpose is vengeance. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jay Snyder. Midnight in the Pacific: Guadalcanal - The Worl...

A sweeping narrative history - the first in over 20 years - of America´s first major offensive of World War II, the brutal, no-quarter-given campaign to take Japanese-occupied Guadalcanal. From early August until mid-November of 1942, US marines, sailors, and pilots struggled for dominance against an implacable enemy: Japanese soldiers, inculcated with the bushido tradition of death before dishonor, avatars of bayonet combat - close-up, personal, and gruesome. The glittering prize was Henderson Airfield. Japanese planners knew that if they neutralized the airfield, the battle was won. So did the marines who stubbornly defended it. The outcome of the long slugfest remained in doubt under the pressure of repeated Japanese air, land, and sea operations. And losses were heavy. At sea, in a half-dozen fiery combats, the US Navy fought the Imperial Japanese Navy to a draw, but at a cost of more than 4,500 sailors. More American sailors died in these battles off Guadalcanal than in all previous US wars, and each side lost 24 warships. On land, more than 1,500 soldiers and marines died, and the air war claimed more than 500 US planes. Japan´s losses on the island were equally devastating - starving Japanese soldiers called it ´´the island of death´´. But when the attritional struggle ended, American marines, sailors, and airmen had halted the Japanese juggernaut that for five years had whirled through Asia and the Pacific. Guadalcanal was America´s first major ground victory against Japan and, most importantly, the Pacific War´s turning point. Published on the 75th anniversary of the battle and utilizing vivid accounts written by the combatants at Guadalcanal, along with marine corps and army archives and oral histories, Midnight in the Pacific is both a sweeping narrative and a compelling drama of individual marines, soldiers, and sailors caught in the crosshairs of history. The Silent Service in World War II: The Story o...

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the US Navy had a total of 111 submarines. However, this fleet was not nearly as impressive as the number suggests. It was mostly a collection of aging boats from the late teens and early twenties, with only a few of the newer, more modern Gato-class boats. Fortunately, with the war in Europe was already two years old and friction with Japan ever increasing, help from what would become known as the Silent Service in the Pacific was on the way: there were 73 of the new fleet submarines under construction. The Silent Service in World War II tells the story of America´s intrepid underwater warriors in the words of the men who lived the war in the Pacific against Japan. The enemy had already begun to deploy advanced boats, but the U.S. was soon able to match them. By 1943, the new Gato-class boats were making a difference, carrying the war not just to the Japanese Imperial Navy but to the vital merchant fleet that carried the vast array of materiel needed to keep the land of the Rising Sun afloat. As the war progressed, American success in the Solomons, starting with Guadalcanal, began to constrict the Japanese sea lanes, and operating singly or in wolfpacks, they were able to press their attacks on convoys operating beyond the range of our airpower, making daring forays even into the home waters of Japan itself in the quest for ever more elusive targets. Also taking on Japanese warships, as well as rescuing downed airmen (such as the grateful first President Bush), US submarines made an enormous contribution to our war against Japan. 1. Slow but Deadly, the Dive-Bombers of World War ...

The theme of this book is the exploration of the theory and practice of dive-bombing, which tactic proved more precise than that of level-flight bombers and more effective than air-launched torpedo attacks against surface ships. It is also the author´s purpose to come to a more general conclusion as to the effectiveness of dive-bombing under actual combat conditions. In this regard the words and observations of several dive-bomber aviators have been incorporated. While the best known dive-bomber was the Stuka, the most successful of the major dive-bombing airframes was undoubtedly the American-made Douglas SBD Dauntless that would prove (like most of its type) to be Slow But Deadly - hence the title of this book. Dive-bombing made a name for itself in the Second World War; some might say it created a legend. The 400-year-long naval dominance of the surface battleship had been transferred almost overnight to the aircraft carrier, thus proving the adage that future wars are often fought with the knowledge and weapons of the past. The Stuka Ju-87 and the Aichi D3As were among the best known aircraft among those who lived through the war. That the Dauntless came out of the war as the premier purpose-designed dive-bomber may be due as much to the fact that the Axis lost the war and the Allies emerged victorious. Yet the SBD had certain innate characteristics that made it great. Slow But Deadly, the SBD sank over 300,000 tons of enemy shipping in the Pacific theater alone. It killed 18 warships from submarines to battleships, and it was the premier killer of aircraft carriers among all other weapons systems sinking six flattops almost entirely without assistance and damaging several more. From May to November 1942, SBDs sank or disabled 30 percent of the naval strength of the Empire of Japan and decimated its carrier air arm causing one authority to declare the Dauntless ´´the worst enemy of the Imperial Navy of Japan.´´ 1. New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of science fiction, urban fantasy, and paranormal romance brings another action-, adventure-, and suspense-filled story to transport listeners out of this world. Jo Strauss is committed to two things in her life - her family and her life as an acrobat/high-wire performer; she takes both very seriously. Her life is orderly, in control, and she is finally settling down in one place so she can spend more time with her parents instead of moving all over the world every few weeks. To celebrate her and her younger sister Star´s one year anniversary away from the circus they have grown up with, they meet River Knight, their childhood friend and sister of the heart, for a vacation in the mountains of North Carolina. Everything is going as planned until she and her sisters are kidnapped. Now, she finds herself transported to another world. Aliens, warships, battles, and a certain male all were not in the carefully detailed plans she had mapped out for her life. Manota Ja Kel Coradon is the second son of the ruling House of Kassis. He is known as the dark brother, a reputation that he lives up to. He has fought hard to protect his family and the people of Kassis, at times sacrificing parts of his soul to do so. His knowledge, skills, and development of weaponry are legendary. His skill as a warrior brings shivers of fear to his opponents, who know he never offers mercy to any who stand in his way. Manota is in total control of his world, until one slender, feisty alien female crashes through the shields he has placed around his heart. She is fearless, determined, and stubborn. She absolutely refuses to cower before him, no matter how much he growls. He is determined to protect her and claim her as his own, but there is one little problem - she will not agree to accept his claim unless he returns for her parents. Now, he has even bigger problems that come in all different shapes, 1. Language: English. Narrator: Samantha Cook. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/blak/008964/bk_blak_008964_sample.mp3.
